About Rosie Wright

Musician, music educator, and passionate advocate for inclusive music-making.

A lifelong love of music

I grew up surrounded by music. My father, Ian Wright, was Principal Timpanist with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and later Head of Percussion at the Royal Northern College of Music. I started piano at six, percussion at thirteen, and within three years was playing with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (including the Royal Albert Hall at The Proms). I studied at the RNCM, graduating in 1999 with a BA in Percussion Performance, then spent nearly a decade as a freelance orchestral percussionist with symphony and opera orchestras across the north of England — including performing alongside my father at the Liverpool Philharmonic.

Teaching

Since 1999, teaching has been at the heart of what I do. I've taught in schools, community settings, and one-to-one for over 25 years, from complete beginners to ABRSM preparation. My approach is straightforward: lessons should be enjoyable, tailored to the individual, and grounded in what motivates the student. Since 2016 I've delivered whole-class music in Merseyside primary schools (ukulele and percussion, Key Stages 1 and 2). I hold an enhanced DBS check, current safeguarding certification, and extensive experience with pupils with additional needs including autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, and learning disabilities.

Community music and performance

Community music has been a constant thread. I led the Wirral Ukulele Fanatics for five years and was co-founder and Family Activities Coordinator at the Fire in the Mountain Folk Festival in mid-Wales. I'm currently in Mersey Belles (close harmony ukulele), perform as Rose & Willow (ukulele and drums) with Kris Willow Turner, work as a solo vocalist and ceilidh caller, teach Celtic folk music and dance through Melody Makers, and dep with Liverpool Sinfonia for orchestral choral concerts.

A bit more about me

I'm based on the Wirral and have lived in the area most of my life. I'm a mum to Melody — who is currently teaching me fiddle — and I'm working towards a music therapy qualification with Nordoff Robbins as a longer-term aspiration. I speak French, with some Spanish and German, and hold a full UK driving licence.
